As I was teaching the mid-week class last night, the subject of Bible commetaries and the importance of really understanding what the Bible says came up. I promised that I would post up some suggestions along with links to check them out or purchase them, so here’s a few.

The MacArthur Bible Commentary by John MacArthur– my absolute favorite one-volume Bible commentary. Deep, yet very readable and accessible to even new believers. MacArthur is, in my opinion, one of the greatest theologians alive today and pretty much anything he writes gets the highest recommendation from me: http://www.lifeway.com/product/001265824/

Believer’s Bible Commentary by William MacDonald–another excellent commentary. Very readable, and although not as in-depth as MacArthur’s, I recommend it nonetheless: http://www.lifeway.com/product/001122786/

We also talked some about apologetics, the art of defending your faith, so here’s a couple of recommendations:

Holman QuickSource Guide to Christian Apologetics by Doug Powell– a good basic introduction to apologetics: http://www.lifeway.com/product/001296860/

The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel– an incredible book written from the perspective of an investigative journalist seeking to “force the truth about Christ and Christianity out into the open”. You want to read this book: http://www.lifeway.com/product/001063503/
