GAFFNEY, S.C. — A church in Gaffney is grieving and praying after a miniature train derailment injured more than a dozen people and killed a boy at Cleveland Park in Spartanburg on Saturday.

Police said 15 children and two adults were taken to a local hospital after the train derailed about 1 p.m.

Park officials said the derailment happened within the first hour of the first day of operation this season.

Sixteen of the nearly 30 passengers on the train were members of the Corinth Baptist Church in Gaffney. Church leaders said Sunday they were participating in a children’s day event.
